On Saturday, April 5, local pages and social media accounts circulated a claim that camps had been established in northern Syria to accommodate residents of Gaza. This purportedly occurred north of Al-Bab city in Aleppo's countryside, following an official agreement to relocate Gaza's residents to Syria and Jordan.
Screenshots images show numerous plastic tents seemingly prepared to shelter displaced individuals in an undeveloped, dirt landscape
The "Verify" team conducted research to assess the validity of the claim and its accompanying images, which alleged the construction of new camps near Al-Bab city in Aleppo's countryside for Gaza's displaced. It was revealed to be misleading.
The images shared with the claim actually show a camp for Syrian displaced individuals in the northern countryside of Aleppo, established before the fall of the ousted Assad regime, as confirmed by our correspondent in northern Syria.
Our team obtained photos taken on Sunday, April 6, of the same camp, which matched the tents shown in the viral claim images. These images were from a camp in Bara'an village, affiliated with Akhtarin city, photographed by Bahaa al-Nayef.
In this context, the local council of Akhtarin city, located in northern Aleppo countryside, denied the accuracy of the viral claim via a clarifying statement posted on their official Facebook page.
They explained that the camp in Bara'an village had been initiated before the fall of the Assad regime, an old project unrelated to current events in Gaza.
Advanced searches using key Arabic and English keywords through local and regional reputable media outlets yielded no results supporting the claim or any agreement to relocate Gaza's Palestinians to Syria.
According to a CBS News report published on March 19, the administration of President Donald Trump, in cooperation with the Israeli government, engaged with the governments of Sudan and Somalia, and showed interest in Syria as potential resettlement locations for Palestinians from Gaza.
The report highlighted that these efforts led by President Trump aim to resolve the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and reconstruct the devastated area. American and Israeli officials had also reached out to Sudan and Somalia, and expressed interest in Syria.
Sources informed CBS that the U.S. government had attempted to connect with the new Syrian administration via a third party, but it remains unclear if the Syrian side responded.
