Social media users and pages have recently circulated a photo of a magnifying glass placed in an agricultural field; it was claimed that it has been used to burn agricultural fields in al-Hasakah northern Syria.

They claimed that “the satanic method to set the fields on fire in al-Hasakah is exposed; it’s been done by placing magnifying glasses on the crop,” arguing that once the temperature rises, it will cause a fire, and the perpetrator would be gone.

Verify-Sy checked the photo; it turned out that it was taken in the Iraq province of Mosul, and it was circulated on Iraqi media outlets. “Photos Expose One Reason of Burning the Crops in the Country” reported Al-Sumaria, an Iraqi TV channel, on 5 June. The rest of the photos show members of the Iraqi army and civilians near the tool.

A wave of crop fires has hit areas in northern and northeast Syria, which are controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces. The extent of the crops losses is still unknown. However, the fires are among the largest fires in the region since many years.
