Correction: An earlier version of this article falsely stated that the aerobatics show was performed as part of the celebrations of the Italian Republic Day. In fact, it was performed to pay tribute to the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Saudi news channel Al-Arabiya posted on Facebook video footage of aerobatics drawing the colors of the Italian flag. It’s claimed Italy was celebrating lifting travel restrictions that were imposed due to the coronavirus crisis.
Roya, a news channel, has also published a news report titled, “Fighter Jets Drawing Italian Flag above Milan after Recording Zero Covid-19 Deaths.”
Claims similar to Roya’s have been circulated on social media.
What’s the real story?
Verify-Sy Platform conducted a search using the suitable keywords and reverse image search and found that the video footage and photos show Italian fighter jets flew over Milan's Duomo cathedral on Monday, May 25, 2020.
However, the aerobatics was not performed to celebrate lifting the flight ban or recording zero deaths caused by Covid-19. In fact, the show aims to pay tribute to the victims of the pandemic, and the tour will end on the 74th anniversary of the Italian Republic Day on June 2.
Media agencies reported that the Frecce Tricolori aerobatic squad of the Italian Air Force flew on the occasion of the 74th anniversary of the founding of the Italian Republic on June 2, 1946 to bring a message of unity and solidarity during the coronavirus pandemic.
The death toll due to Covid-19 reached 32877 last Monday in the country, with 92 new deaths, according to the Italian authorities.
Italy's government on Saturday approved a decree which will allow travel to and from abroad from June 3, France 24 reported. The government will also allow free travel across the country as of that day. Italy was the first European country to impose tight restrictions on travel domestically since the outbreak of the pandemic.
