Ahmad Primo, the Executive Director of "Verify-sy," highlighted the emergence of covertly managed campaigns actively operating in Syria. These campaigns were identified by the platform's teams during their efforts to monitor and analyze the rising wave of misinformation on social media after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. Primo emphasized the serious risks these campaigns pose to Syrian society and issued a strong warning against being drawn into them.
Campaign 1: Sectarian Incitement
This campaign leverages out-of-context or old videos that are being reshared, alongside genuine footage showing incidents of violence by civilians or armed groups against former regime members. However, these are presented in a way that suggests acts of sectarian retaliation.
Campaign 2: Collection of Sensitive Information
Anonymous links are being circulated, purportedly aimed at resolving the status of officers or government employees. These links pose a significant security risk to those who interact with them.
Campaign 3: Distortion of Detainee Narratives
This campaign seeks to undermine the credibility of genuine testimonies by promoting fabricated accounts. An example includes a case highlighted by CNN, where a jailer was misrepresented as a survivor of Assad's prisons.
Primo urged the public to exercise caution and verify information before sharing it. He also called for collaborative efforts and heightened awareness to limit the spread of these campaigns and mitigate their harmful effects on Syrian society.
